It is estimated that 7-10 million people are affected worldwide; however, this number is likely to rise significantly in the next years due to an ageing population. Most patients are diagnosed around the age of 60. The disease can, however, occur, especially in genetic cases at a very early age: up to 10 % of cases are diagnosed before the age of 40. In general, men are more likely to be diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease than women.
